As a physically challenging practice, Ashtanga yoga cultivates concentration, self-awareness and control of the senses, while also building strength and body control. Ashtanga encourages a regular, dedicated practice, allowing the inner strength and peace of mind discovered on the yoga mat to become part of everyday life, long after you step off the mat. In this course, you’ll explore the asanas of the Ashtanga Primary Series including the Sun Salutations, standing sequence, and selected finishing postures. You’ll also learn how to incorporate Ujjayi breathing, synchronise breath with movement, and engage the energy locks (bandhas) as an integral part of your practice. Previous experience with Ashtanga yoga can be helpful, but not required. There are six Ashtanga series in total. In this course, we’ll practise a modified version of the Primary Series (the first series). The full Primary Series takes about 90 min to complete (with shavasana), so each 75 min session leaves out some asanas. Correct alignment is an important part of the practice, and practitioners often spend a long time working with the same series before progressing to the next. Even when the sequence of postures stays the same, every practice is different. Six key focus points of Ashtanga Yoga: · Ujjayi / Breath A steady, controlled breathing technique that helps maintain rhythm, build internal heat, and anchor the mind.. · Vinyasa / Synchronized breath and movement Each movement is linked to an inhale or exhale, creating a continuous flow between postures. · Asana / The postures A sequence of postures develops strength, flexibility, balance, stamina, and body awareness. · Drishti / Focused gaze Directing the gaze to a specific point helps cultivate concentration and draw attention inward. · Bandhas / Energy locks Subtle muscular engagements, particularly around the pelvic floor and lower abdomen, traditionally used to support stability, control, and the flow of energy. · Regular practice Repeating the sequence over time encourages discipline, self-awareness, patience, and a meditative state. Although the sequence stays consistent, each practice feels different. 80€, for Korkkari Members and class pack holders 70€. If space is available, you can also join a single class for 25€ (send us a message about drop-in).
